Join us for a screening of the award-winning documentary A Life Illuminated featuring Dr. Edie Widder and directed by Tasha Van Zandt.

From director Tasha Van Zandt, this documentary highlights marine biologist Dr. Edie Widder, as she undertakes a daring descent 3,300 feet below the ocean’s surface to document a mysterious bioluminescent phenomenon.

Combining footage from her latest expedition with archival material from her pioneering career, the film explores her lifelong quest to illuminate the hidden wonders of the deep sea and highlights the importance of preserving its fragile ecosystems.

Michael J. Moore

WHOI marine scientist, author, and veterinarian

Michael J. Moore, Vet. M.B., Ph.D., has a veterinary degree from the University of Cambridge in the UK, and a Ph.D. from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA. He has been based at WHOI since 1986, and is now a Senior Scientist in the Biology Department. He is the Director of the WHOI Marine Mammal Center, and consults with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, supporting their conservation of large whales and stranded marine mammals on Cape Cod.

Peter de Menocal

and Director

Peter is WHOI’s eleventh President and Director. He is an oceanographer and paleoclimatologist. Prior to joining WHOI, Peter founded Columbia University’s Center For Climate And Life – a research accelerator that supports and trains the next generation of Earth scientists.

Véronique LaCapra

Special Projects

Véronique is a writer, editor, and event host who manages, plans, and executes projects that range from ghost-writing for senior leadership to hosting WHOI’s online public event series “Ocean Encounters.” She is a former public radio science reporter and holds a Ph.D. in biogeochemistry.
